Germany v Algeria

June 30th 2014, Porto Alegre
Schürrle scored

Schürrle scored the breakthrough goal for Germany in the first part of Extra Time

Report

Playing for a quarter final place against France, Germany were everyone's certainty to go through, but the Algerians obviously hadn't read the script, tactically they packed the midfield, played a quick closing down game and broke with pace, this upset the Germans, who got so frustrated they started pushing more players forward, leaving huge gaps in there defence, Algeria had some great counter attacks in which they really should have capitalised on, they had at least 4 great goal scoring chances, a very entertaining half

Germany 0 Algeria 0

Second half Germany predictably came out far more disciplined, Algeria remained spirited with a few counter attacks, but you always felt the longer the game went on the quality of the Germans would see them through, however at 90 mins although there had been chances at both ends the score remained

Germany 0 Algeria 0

Within a couple of minutes of extra time, Germany got the breakthrough, Muller put in a cross from the left and a fine flick from Shurrie ended up into the corner of the net,

Germany 1 Algeria 0

The goal meant Algeria had to push forward and abandon there previous discipline, this made the game very end to end, but no real surprise when Ozil added a second,

Germany 2 Algeria 0

Algeria got a deserved consolation goal from Djabou, but it was far too late in the game to worry Germany. Another entertaining game which has involved Germany !

Germany 2 Algeria 1

Algeria reminded me of a few Saints performances last season, if only they had taken a couple of there great chances, they could of caused a major upset, as it is Germany go through to play France in the quarter finals, Germany were shocked by Algeria tonight, but against France they will be more suited to playing and will know exactly what they are up against,
