Group C CatchUp

Group C CatchUp

Time caught me out last week so this is a quick review of last Thursdays games and a look at the maths for the last round of games tomorrow.

France carried on against Peru how they finished the previous game and continued to be unconvincing. Their break through came in the first half when Giroud's shot spun off a deflection over the head of the Peruvian keeper and fell at the feet of a delighted Mbappe, who duly kicked off his world cup goal tally. This, for a short period threaten to loosen the French shackles and they looked in control for a period but nothing came off it. In the second half with Peru facing a World Cup elimination they came out wanting to give their brilliant fans something to cheer. They knocked the ball around with confidence but they couldn't get behind a very organised French set up and so were left relying on efforts from a distance. They came the closest when Pedro Aquino hit the bar but for all their chances they didn't really bother the French, but the same could be said for Les Blues the difference in the end was that Peru didn't have that little bit of luck that seems to be following the French around.

Another World Cup game and another VAR penalty, the Danish manager claimed that VAR is taking the charm out of the game, but there is no charm in denying an underdog a penalty, especially a team doing everything to stay the pace. The Danes took the lead with a great technical finish from Christian Eriksen after a really sweet set up ball. The Aussies drew level when a header from Leckie hit the hand of Poulsen and VAR declared a penalty. It was down to the ever dependent Jedinak to keep his cool and draw the Socceroos level. This point keeps the Aussies alive and it's no less than they deserve.

They say championship winning sides win when they are playing badly, obviously time will tell if this maxim refers to France, they have done enough to get out of the group and a draw with Denmark will see them top it. The Danes are the team whose fortunes could vary the most; if they can find some shooting power and do the French they will top the group or if they loose and the Aussies win by a couple then they are going home with the Saudis, well not exactly, imagine getting knocked out of the World Cup and then ending up in a Carlsberg free Riyadh. For what is worth I can see Peru winning and it will be at ease Denmark.
