Who the hell knows?

Who the hell knows??

According to my When Saturday Comes World Cup Team Guide, Poland are not expected to match their third place finishes from 1974 and 1982, but do seem to have their strongest team since those tournaments. Japan on the other hand are just hoping to get out of the group. Hopes seem to be higher in Colombia and Senegal, although the former have injury worries and the latter have hit some less than stellar form recently. So who knows? It should be an open group and I’m looking to Colombia and Senegal to provide the skill and excitement, while I’m imagining Poland and Japan will be more organised and workmanlike. I have no real insight about the various teams’ style of play, this is just how it is playing out in my head, probably helped by Sadio Mane’s speedy skill and James Rodriguez smashing in a long range shot that cannons off the bar into the net. I’m sure he must do this every game, right?

Japan will probably have the most travelling fans of the four in this group, they will have huge Nippon Ultras banners and will entertain us with a song that has no words just fans going “oooh oooh oooh oooh”, which makes me think of Carry On Films. There is still tension between Russia and Poland and their fans may be a little boisterous outside the stadiums!

To my disappointment the WSC supplement doesn’t mention either Maya Yoshida or Jan Bednarek in its write up of this group, but I am looking forward to seeming both of them play, so they better get picked.

Apparently, in Poland Tomasz Hajto (remember him?) is one of their co-commentators, and he is known to say things like “The Strawberry on the cake” to describe a long range pass; which is more coherent than anything Glenn Hoddle has ever said.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this group plays out, and wouldn't be surprised to see any of the four come out on top.
