Game 1: Mexico 1-0 Germany

I spent my early afternoon in Mudeford, being bought a lovely Father's Day lunch in the Noisy Lobster, and then got some Purbeck ice cream (can I just say, the salted caramel ice cream is just UNBELIEVABLY good!) from the stand on the front there. On the way back we survived some massively suicidal (and if it had been successful, homicidal to the beast pack) driving from the other drivers on the M27 and got back home in time to have a coffee and settle down for what had the potential to be a really good game of football.

And honestly, certainly for the first half, I wasn't disappointed. I bet a lot of people didn't see this coming, I mentioned in my initial preview of the group that Mexico could either be very experienced with some youth and verve or used up and worn out, it was definitely the former and, to a large degree, Germany were the latter.

The Germans were obsessed with Kimmich, a player who whilst scintillating going forward on occasions (not today) is quite a long way from being a defender. They have Boateng (who I mentioned I didn't think was very good but who was actually the better one of the pair in the middle) and Hummels, possibly one of the world's most overrated central defenders. They also had a left back I'd never heard of who didn't do anything and wasn't really contributing in either direction on the pitch.

Yogi Loew seems to think everyone is just going to roll over for them, this was just like watching their World Cup buildup, they did the same thing again and again, mostly unsuccessfully, and got sucker punched repeatedly by the Mexicans breaking in high numbers and attacking them. If the Mexicans had more composure in front of goal it would have been about 3-0 by half-time against the Germans.

Anyway, this is not supposed to be a massive blow by blow account, just a quick blog.

My summary is, Mexico will get out of this group if they get anything from South Korea, Germany now have to completely annihilate Sweden just to get some of their Mojo back.

Yogi has to change stuff, the tactics are not working, the only bright spark in their game today was Julian Draxler, he was very good in a poor team performance. Yogi also has to give them a midfield because today Sammi and Tony were completely overrun and he did nothing to change it when he could have so easily.

On a bad point for the Mexicans, they scream and roll around almost as much as the Germans and, quite frankly, by 10 minutes into the 2nd half they were completely knackered, totally fecked, a team like Germany should have been today would have annihilated them in the last half an hour.

Anyway, the Mexicans deserved the win, there were no sombreros, Serapes & lazily smoked cigarillos in this game.

They gave it their all and got their just deserts… As did the Germans, I hope this gives them the kick up the arse required to get them playing decent football again, because, surprisingly, they got exactly what they deserved as well.
